The Perfect 8-Day Costa Rica Family Itinerary: Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio Beach
Days 1–3: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano
Your trip begins with a private transfer from San José Airport (SJO) straight to La Fortuna, at the foot of Arenal Volcano — about a 3-hour ride through the Costa Rican countryside.
Day 1 — Arrival
Land at SJO, meet your driver, and settle in for the ride to La Fortuna. Many of our families ask their driver to stop along the way for a coffee or fruit stand — just let us know when you book.
Possible stops along the way:
Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center — Just 15 minutes from the airport, a great way to stretch your legs right at the start of the trip. Sloths, monkeys, and scarlet macaws are common sights.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens — A private nature park roughly midway, with waterfalls, a butterfly observatory, hummingbird gardens, and an animal sanctuary. A popular detour for families with extra time on arrival day.
A coffee farm in Alajuela (such as Doka Estate) — A relaxed introduction to Costa Rica's coffee culture, just north of San José.
San Ramón — A good midpoint town for a bathroom break, snacks, or a casual lunch.
Gasolinera Chachagua — A fuel and rest stop just before arriving in La Fortuna.
Day 2 — Sloths & Hot Springs
Spend the morning on an easy, flat sloth-watching trail (great for all ages), then unwind all afternoon in one of La Fortuna's natural hot springs, fed by the volcano itself.
Day 3 — Volcano & Waterfalls
Walk the hanging bridges for volcano views, then cool off with a swim at La Fortuna Waterfall.
Day 4: Transfer to Manuel Antonio
This is where door-to-door transportation really pays off. Instead of navigating unfamiliar roads with tired kids, your private driver handles the roughly 4-hour journey from the highlands down to the Pacific coast — comfortably, safely, and on your schedule.
One advantage of a private transfer over a shared shuttle or self-drive: you can ask your driver to build in a stop or two along the way, with no pressure to keep to someone else's schedule.
Possible stops along the way:
Tárcoles Bridge ("Crocodile Bridge") — A quick, free roadside stop to spot large crocodiles in the river below. A favorite five-minute leg-stretcher for kids.
Carara National Park — A short detour near Tárcoles known for scarlet macaw sightings and an easy rainforest trail, if your family wants a longer nature break.
Playa Tárcoles — Right off the highway, with casual seafood restaurants serving fresh fish and patacones (fried plantains) — a nice lunch stop with an ocean view.
Jacó — A lively beach town roughly midway, good for a bathroom break, a snack, or a short beach walk if you have extra time.
Local sodas (small family-run diners) — Found in towns along the route; a great way to try a casado, the classic Costa Rican plate.

Days 5–7: Manuel Antonio Beach
Day 5 — Manuel Antonio National Park
A guided morning hike through the rainforest, ending on one of the most photographed beaches in Costa Rica. Monkeys, sloths, and iguanas are common sightings along the trail. Tip: book park entry online in advance and arrive right at 7am opening to beat the heat and the crowds.
Day 6 — Beach Day
A full day with no agenda. Swim, relax by the pool, and let the kids run on the sand.
Day 7 — Catamaran Tour
A family-friendly boat tour along the coast, with a chance to spot dolphins or whales depending on the season, followed by a relaxed final evening watching the sunset.
Day 8: Departure
Your private driver picks you up from your Manuel Antonio hotel and takes you back to San José Airport (SJO) — about a 3-hour ride. We recommend leaving plenty of buffer time before your flight.
This is the same coastal road as your Day 4 transfer, so it's a good chance to catch any stop you missed the first time — the Tárcoles crocodile bridge and a quick coffee in Jacó are both easy additions if your flight time allows.
